                                                                                Healthy Education

This year the Health Fair is back at PPCHS to educate and increase every student’s knowledge about Health Sciences. A variety of doctors and fitness specialists will be coming to the gymnasium February 26, 2010 and will be holding discussions, activities and presentations to help student’s better understand what they do and why?  These doctors and presenters are coming from across Broward County. Some of them are coming from well-known hospitals such as Memorial Regional, and others have their own practice. We will also be expecting the Pembroke Pines Fire Department.  As well as having people who have experienced the field already, coordinators are bringing many more universities than last year, in order for students to receive first hand information from students studying to become health specialists. Students who don’t want to become doctors will also have a chance to meet specialists such as nutritionists and people involved in sports medicine.
The Health Fair was first held at PPCHS last year. It was amazing, but many have said that the second is going to have much more student involvement and more firsthand experience with each new field. The two major brains of this project include the sponsor: PPCHS’s own Mrs. Margarita Santiago and the coordinator Sophomore Lucas Lucchini. Both them and their team of volunteers are collecting supplies, gathering supporters, presenters, setting up the gym and much more.  Reporters asked Lucas Lucchini (12’) what he wants his peers to take from this year’s Health Fair; “I want my peers to be able to get health related information as to how they can succeed in health sciences and enjoy themselves.”
Mrs. Margarita Santiago explained that the major purpose of the Health Fair is for students to get exposure to the world of health. She wants students to have a better understanding of what they are learning in their biology and anatomy classrooms. A more informed background will give students a better understanding in order to make decisions based on their interests. “Look at all the opportunities it creates!” states Mrs. Santiago.
